Falling out of love.

I was reading The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman, and there were two parts that I totally could understand. One is the part where Will and Lyra and to leave their daemons behind, and the other part where they had to close the "windows" between their worlds, and never meet again, even though they've fallen in love with each other.

As I was reading that section, I was agreeing with every word that Pullman chose. Separation between the one you love most and yourself just feels so much like cutting yourself into half. And the feeling of being alone after that, missing an entire chunk of your being. The feeling of betrayal, and the knowledge that the other part will return somehow, because staying apart forever would be unthinkable. Falling in love with the most perfect person in the world, and knowing that you can never be forever with them, and yet thinking about them and the one they'll eventually marry, and telling them that it wouldn't be fair to compare the love between them, with the love for the person they eventually marry.

In Pullman's universe, Lyra is Eve, and the tempting apple is love. Paradise is the childhood innocence, and Knowledge/Sin, is the hell of romantic love, and the wisdom of maturity. Paradise is about being with the one you love, no matter what, like how kids stick together with their best friend. Knowledge is about the pain of losing someone perfect for you, knowing that some part of you has already been given to someone else, knowing that you can never be as happy as your happiest moment. Knowing that you can never return to Paradise. Knowing that the rest of your life might very well be spent with the one you know you can never love as much, can never love as completely.

Maybe that's what this is all about.
