Sometimes, there is an emotional disconnect in a person's mind. Something commonplace, something taken for granted is assimilated into the background and is not noticed as a matter of fact. Until it is thrust in your face. That's why girls are so scared of blood :)
Extending this analogy a little further, it explains the curious example of Yaoi Girl, who thinks up all manner of plots for her characters in her mind, but when faced with something notti that concerns her directly, she freaks out and retreats into her shell of purity, becoming prudish :0
